Do you think it is possible for a couple to go through an entire marriage without straying or having thoughts/urges regarding a relationship with someone else?
Many societies that have been untouched by modern culture practice polygamy (relationships with more than one person) and it is completely accepted. Do you think that if it was the norm, you would have relationships with more than one individual?
Do you believe in true love? Or do you believe it is possible to love more than one person? Why?
In what ways have media and religion influenced your view of love and marriage?

Your website raised a lot of really interesting topics! Society in general presents marriage as a milestone in life that everyone should eventually reach in order to be truly happy and fulfilled. However, so many married couples are not happy with their relationships. I think that couples should communicate about what they want out of their relationship before getting married and continue to communicate when they're married also.
ReplyDeleteIn responding to the first question, I disagree with the prompt because marriage is not something that should be natural. It should be a decision reached after much prior thought and discussion. Marriage should only occur until all possible questions or doubts in a relationship are answered or resolved somehow, even if some sacrifices must be made in order to do so.
DeleteWhile marriage may or may not be entirely natural, I believe that human beings benefit greatly from it, when the marriage is successful. Yes, divorce rates are high, but that is not a reason to give up. Humans have a very natural and instinctual need for companionship, and marriage is the most practical way to achieve this lifelong partnership. It is also true that the country we live in allows special privileges to married couples, such as the conjoined financial aspect of marriage, among others.
ReplyDeleteEven though people tend to think marriage is so simple, I think it takes a lot of work. I feel like when you're dating someone, you can do the whole 'on again off again' thing when you break up and get back together blah blah blah. You can't really do that in marriage. Well, you could, but marriage is a bigger bond, and do you really want to go through /divorce/ that much? Marriage is a huge commitment to one person, and it takes lots of thinking and planning and, if I can quote John Green, 'mutual generosity'. It seems people tend to get married without thinking of what it entails, which leads to high divorces rates. I'm not saying getting married right away is bad, long marriages can end in divorce too, but sometimes it's better to think it out than rush to a quick choice.

There has to be some complication within every human relationship- that's just how we function. Even friendships require work! I think people can work through the complication factor of marriage just as easily as they work trough it in any other inter-personal relationship. This isn't to say that marriage is very different from other types of relationships- it's much more exclusive! And the elusiveness is good- there is a lot of worth and value and beauty which underline the perpetual commitment and devotion between any two people.
ReplyDeleteThis is a very interesting topic! For question number one I think that all relationships are complicated and require work. Not just romantic ones, but also friendship ones. I have had fights with friends and often have to work to stay in touch. I do not think it is a bad thing, but rather a way to show that I care.
ReplyDeleteI agree and disagree with the prompt. I think that marriage is something that should be natural, but will require work. Not every marriage will succeed, and even the ones that do will experience some rough spots along the way. Great research!
ReplyDeleteYou asked how religion has affected society's views of marriage, however marriage is a religious institution and society has tainted our view of it. Through my own research i have found that it is possible to fall in love with multiple people, and I believe this. Despite that fact, marriage has become the cultural norm, and i have found that there is a psychological reason for it as well through my research. With that, of course it will require work, as do all relationships, but that should just be another test to ourselves to see how strong we are and how accepting we are of others flaws.
ReplyDeleteNice job!

ReplyDeleteIn response to number one, I disagree. Marriage is hard, and it should be. It's you devoting your whole life to one person, and that will take getting used to since everyone is different. I wouldn't say it's impossible for people not to have straying thought or urges, but I know that they happen. What is possible is for people not to follow these straying thoughts or urges. I have so much respect for married couples that are able to fight and make up and stay together for such a long time. Yes, it's true that there are a lot of failed marriages today, but that's not because society has made marriage "the norm," it's because society has made marriage a joke. People fight and give up. Marriage is work as is every relationship including family relationships and friendships, but getting through the hard times is what makes relationships better. It makes people closer. Marriage is that final step for so many couples because it is one person devoting his or her entire life to another. If we were all polygamists, I do believe that life would be harder. I believe in true love and the ability to love more than one person; however, marrying someone doesn't limit the number of people you can love. I can love my future husband and still love my friends and family. Religion is what brought this view into my head, but the older I get, the less it has to do with religion. I just think about how many people in today's world who can't marry the person that they love, and it's sad knowing that the ones who can take the privilege of marriage for granted. Good research. It was an interesting topic that really got me thinking.
ReplyDeleteI think that marriage has natural aspect to it, as well as ones that require thought and effort. I think at the base of every successful relationship is the desire to give up all of yourself to the person. I think that, if this feeling is present, it is easier for the marriage to be successful. I think that every marriage will have it's hard times, where couples question their love and trust toward the other person. But in the end, couples decide between divorce or resolution based on what they are willing to give up for the other.
ReplyDeleteIn response to Julia's comment, I definitely agree that marriage is something that should be given much thought prior to the actual event, but I also think that when you do get married, the feelings you have should feel normal and comfortable since you know the person you are getting married to is the "one".
ReplyDeletefirst of all great blog! Such an interesting topic. I really liked how you question the "normal." I don't really believe in true love. I believe in compatibility and lust. i really liked when you talked about our bodies, those points made really good scene, and our history. how multiple partners is a primal instinct. LOVED IT.
ReplyDeleteWow! Hard questions... I think like any relationship, it is going to be hard and require a lot of effort. The fact is I don't think marriage is natural. So many people get divorced and remarried. I think that people fall in and out of love all the time. It gets complicated when you bring a child into the equation. That is why diverse is so hard. With all the divorce in our world today, this topic is very relevant!! I really liked all your research. It was very interesting to me!
ReplyDeleteI probably seem like a hopeless romantic right now, but I do believe in true love. Love is incredibly complex and difficult but loving someone is one the most important things you can do in your life in my opinion. When you love someone you accept them for everything about them, even the parts of them you differ from or don't like. I think loving someone is sticking with them through all the difficulties that come with love.
ReplyDeleteWhile the institute of marriage in itself may not be completely natural, I believe longer partnership is natural. Struggles and fights are part of a healthy relationship as anger is an emotion of passion and shows that there is something worth fighting for. When there is no fighting or struggle ever, it reflects a lack of passion and leads to isolation and feelings of apathy. I do believe in true love. I think there is someone out there who loves me for who I am and I know I'd be willing to fight for that.
